The Christian heaven consists of the Christians singing and praising God for ever and ever dressed in flowing white gowns and when not worshiping God, playing the harp on clouds. While I am not against worshiping God when done right, most men do NOT like singing in public let alone playing the harp on clouds. Yes I know some men do but lets be honest, most men only sing out aloud at football matches or when they are drunk (usually these two go together).

However in looking at two other religions heavens, we see just why men prefer the Muslim and Mormon heaven over the Christian heaven.

Muslims believe that when you martyr yourself you enjoy the everlasting company of seventy-two virgins. And the Mormons believe that faithful men spend eternity making celestial babies and are Gods of their own planets. It is no wonder that the Islam and Mormon faith have strong male dominance (read more: How the Church has failed men).

I read the bible and I do not see anything about us Christians having everlasting sex but I do see some hope for us men who see singing all day/ year long not the best catch of heaven. In Mathew 25:21 Jesus uses the parable of the Talents and says:

Well done, good and faithful servants; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.

Jermayn,

Good post!

I think we are experiencing our rod (made by us) upon our own backs. Men do not like to sing because we have not valued that as a culture for the last century and a bit. We have failed to teach our boys to love that which is pure (etc) and good. We have accepted the lie over what it means to be a man.

I suppose your blog raises the question of; Biblically, what does it mean to be a man?

In my opinion one of the best books regarding this is called
Future Men
. (Hope the HTML worked :) )

Yes a lot of my current blog posts do raise the post what does it mean to be a biblical man. I ask and talk about it as like you say, churches do NOT know and as a man, I want to know myself (and I am a self confessed stirrer)….

The point I also tried to make is that as a male Christian living in todays world, singing all day does not excite me or most other men. Why would they want to get saved, just so they can sing???

Thanks for your comment Trev and im glad you enjoyed it and yes your html link worked (looking at it now :) )

“Well done, good and faithful servants; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”

What exactly will you rule over?

For your information, Mormonism might be patriarical, but there are more women than men who join or remain active.

Thanks for your comments Jettboy, good to hear your views especially from a different pov.

Good question about exactly what we will rule over. Some say its the New Jerusalem, others we will rule in heaven together.

Others say heaven is enjoying the actual presence of God (Rev 22.3-4) and the absence of pain and sorrow (Rev 21.4) and like what I said above – singing & worshiping God.

I am not 100% sure to be truthfully honest but I like the sound of it.

The Muslim, Protestant and Mormon notions of Heaven are simple-minded. May I recommend traditional Catholicism to you and your readers?

Lots of little ‘helps’ getting there, and some reports, by saints, of what you may expect to find if you win a place there.

Men sing in the choir at traditional Latin Masses, and they are not self-conscious about doing do.

Modern (post Vatican 2) masses are effeminate, and men tend to stay away from them. They tend to appeal to women and children only, alas.

Once you start trying to appeal to your audience, rather than you God, in your religious rites, you are lost.

If you are in the presence of God, as the Apostles were on Mount Tabor, your instinct is to worship. When you are happy, you sing.

Hence the Seraphim circle the Throne, singing the Sanctus, eternally.

The Mormon Heaven is too simplistic? Wow, I have heard a lot of criticisms about Mormonism, but I have only heard the opposite about Mormon Heaven concepts. In fact, it is the very complexity that seems to cofuse and even make people angry. Yes . . . angry because of its unorthodoxy and to some blasphemy.

I can understand some ignorance of Mormonism shown on this blog. It is hard to understand especially when pre-conceptions are prefered to actual understanding. It is just amazing how sweeping the ingnorance is on basic information.

@ Jettboy, Niccolo said the heaven was simple minded, like you said I do not know the ins and outs of the Mormon faith or heaven but the point I was making was that they believe that some people get to make celestial babies and rulers over planets and this type of heaven is more appealing to men than singing all day long.

As a female I do believe that the ‘church’ culture has really failed men. With Jesus meek and mild to a somewhat feminine portrayal of a man that I do not believe would be feminine looking at all due to his trade – a carpenter – so they have been easily lead a stray by things that look more tempting to follow

Thank you for your comments Ariana. In a more recent post “Will the real Jesus please stand up” I address this issue about us seeing and following a God who does not fit what he really was originally.

@Paul – Sorry about your comment getting caught in the spam filter.

The main reason why I say there is a difference between the different religions heavens is mainly because of what they say about heaven.

If you look at the wiki site for heaven the different religions have their different beliefs, whether its the same place or not.

- Muslim (eternal company with virgins)
- Mormonism (Gods of planets)
- Christianity (eternal company with God & worship)
- Roman Catholicism (Purgatory then heaven)
- Jehovah Witness (only 144,000 go to heaven)
- Buddhism (return to earth in different form)

The comment about Mormons eternally making celestial babies is not accurate.

@James – I will take your word for it but from what I have looked into the religion, it is the case indeed.

Mormon beliefs include three separate types of kingdoms or what they refer to as degrees of glory.

You will get more detail over this link. http://ezinearticles.com/?What-Are-the-Mormon-Beliefs-About-Heaven?&id=961557
