During the first week of October 2008 I was given the opportunity to be an armour bearer for Pastor Kayanja for Jubilee World Harvests Eternal 2008 Conference. A lot of people (including Christians) do not like serving other people but I saw this as an opportunity to ONE serve and TWO be under his presence when he prays for people as he is a BIG mover in healings and the Holy Spirit.

Jonathan and his Armour Bearer

Jonathan and his Armour Bearer

What is an Armour Bearer

The term Armour Bearer comes from the story of Jonathon (Son of Saul and best mate of David) and his armour bearer goes up to the camp of Philistines and takes on the whole camp in 1 Samuel 14: 1-23.

So basically in todays world with a Pastor you serve and care for him in anyway. Examples:

  1. you pick him up at the hotel (or met him at church).
  2. carry his stuff into and around church (if needed).
  3. take his bible, notes, props to the pulpit (and set up the pulpit if needed).
  4. volunter during service if the Pastor needs someone.
  5. take a microphone to person getting spoken/ prayed/ talked to etc.
  6. be behind person getting prayed for in case they are ’slain in the spirit’.
  7. usher the Pastor back to the car and or Pastors lounge if needed.

The role may be seem glamorous but it is a lot of work and you have to continually think on your feet and serve, serve and serve. This personally helped me to see things from more of a servants heart which I think 90% of Christians fail in understanding.

Are Todays Armour Bearers Biblical and needed?

Armour Bearers are very big in some areas like Africa were they almost receive rock star stardom. However lets pretend for the sake of the argument that everyone is level headed.

Paul and other New Testament apostles all had people who helped them in their travels. Paul had Timothy, Silas, Luke etc and today the position of an armour bearer can be good for a young up and coming person wanting to be a pastor/ minister as it gives them an idea what is involved and how the Pastor prepars (pray, worship etc).

So what do you think? Do you think they are nessecary and needed in todays world? Is it just another Christian Popstar element?
