A rose paintingLast year around Christmas I dug a little into the history of Father Christmas and studied a little about St Nick. Well this week we have Valentine’s day and while it is just another money making day, I thought I will do the same and find out were it originally came from.

So for all those unromantic and romantic people, bear with me and lets find out about this day…

Like most Christian holidays this has been modified from pagan celebrations and or Catholic saints. History will tell you generally of two saints named Valentine who are attributed with this day.

  1. The first story is about a priest who would marry soldiers secretly against the emperor’s wishes.
  2. The second story is about a guy, called Valentine who was jailed but fell in love with the jailers daughter and he wrote the first ever valentines card signed as “from your Valentine” as he was about to die.

These days however it is just a time for florists and chocolate people to make loads of money and for people to feel special, in saying all that though. I am taking my wife to Cirque Du Soleil Dralion and staying at a nice hotel :D

i’ve never liked valentine’s day because of what it symbolized as i was growing up–just that–a money making holiday, and according to joel barish, something that greeting card companies invented..

my idea of romantic is just the opposite of why people love valentine’s so much. i love it when someone makes a day special for you by doing romantic things out of nothing, and just celebrating a random day of being with you–and not celebrating the one day that society has dictated us to celebrate. it’s crazy seeing almost every guy scouting for reservations the last minute on the 13th. it just sucks for me.

My wife loves it more when I do the small things (make the bed, make breakfast etc) than the huge over the top stuff. She still likes the big over the top stuff however…

Thanks for your comment :D

Agreed. Some nights I feel compelled to bring my wife something nice (bracelet, ear rings), not too expensive but something to show that I still DO care. Valentine’s day is pretty much a day for companies to make money yes, but it is nice to show your appreciation.

I think the problem is that you should just NOT give presents etc at Valentine’s day but we men should more often, whether its a rose picked from a garden etc. I know I need to myself do this more often…

Today’s time we are too busy with our works and some time we forget to pay required attention toward our loved ones. Such days help us to maintain relation with our loved ones.
