Rereading this passage has pointed my thoughts to the kingdom of heaven. In chapter 3 John the Baptist said the kingdom of heaven is near. In Matthew 4 Jesus started his ministry with, "Repent (change your way) for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." In this chapter it says the kingdom of heaven is advancing since the days of John the Baptist. As soon as John baptized Jesus he saw the "Spirit" of God descend upon Jesus. (my emphasis on Spirit) So it is interesting to ponder your question concerning the Holy Spirit. But I would say John did see the Holy Spirit that day and the kingdom of heaven began.
