I have not written much lately due to an increase of popularity in Kick2Kick.net and being busy playing with WotUSeek.com but hears a thought provoking thought that hopefully will get some interest and cause you to think and rethink some Christian myths.

Church is like Ice Cream. I like Spearmint, what do You Like?

You are properly asking what ice cream has to do with anything to do with church but I use the ice cream example to point that church is like ice cream and that different churches have different flavours and some people prefer another flavour of church than you.

No offense but if your of the elder generation you may prefer an older style church where you sing hymns instead of Hillsong or Planet Shakers worship songs. Does not mean its wrong or that your not saved, No its just that your flavour is different.

Some people need a stricter militant style church to keep them on track while others would suffer under it and prefer a more casual church. Other people prefer churches that feature a similar culture/ country/ region, while others like churches that are small or some like large churches.

While I believe that every church should be teaching the same Jesus from the same bible I am not against you going to a church that is your flavour.

Very true, the church I used to go to was founded back in the 50’s and a lot of the original members have a lot of trouble accepting the newer worship songs.

They are trying to strike a balance, but it’s hard to keep everyone happy.

This is a good thought on how there is differences between churches and depending on your own tastes (pardon the pun) – you need to go to a church that feeds you depending on your flavour requirements.

Thanks for your comments Tellitubbi and John.

One way churches find the balance is having two services. One early for the older generation and one later for the younger generation…
While I think old and young can and should worship together, it can be done in good effect.

Not to be over critical, but…this all seems a little subjective and off the main objective of Church. If worship is about how we feel, then fine pick one like you pick an ice cream. But if Church is the Bride of Christ, who corporately worships Him each Lord’s day, then there must be some objectivity regarding how He requires to be worshiped.

In my opinion you are expressing, quite well, one of the major reasons why Christendom is no longer the salt. If we are to operate Church to supply the flavors of ice cream we have missed the point. Maybe we should consider that when using the entire Bible, God reveals what is good and what is strange fire. He determines how He is to be worshiped. Our duty is obedience to His Word, not our own subjective tastes.

I am not saying back to the 50’s. In fact I believe we are experiencing God’s covenant judgment for the emphases the Church had back then (and even back another 50 years). What I am saying is that we should not be wanting to determine Church worship subjectively and in an autonomous fashion. We should want to submit to what the Scriptures teach and also consider all of Church history (from Adam to now).

To be somewhat provocative…most of us would cringe at weighty hymns and Psalms and a liturgy that expresses some order because we have been raised to enjoy ice cream instead of the meat of God’s Word (which has to be chewed and chewed).

You need to go to a Church that is obediently faithful to Christ in all things, including how He is worshiped. Over time, junk food is never good for you..it corrupts and rots!

It has been said that culture is religion externalised. So while there may be slight variation, most Churches should feel/look similar. Our Churches should be fashioning themselves after the world. In fact a worship service should be user unfriendly to outsiders. If an unbeliever entered they should be struck with an obedient people and fall on their faces due to the heaviness of their sin. We have a long way to go…

Trev, I think you may have missed my point which is probably my fault!

I am not suggesting you choose a church on your ‘feelings’ but rather choose a church where God has called you too.

What I am saying is that church are different and you need to go to a church where God will use you, challenge you, change you for the better and make you into the man/ women of God he intended you to be. This way you can influence the world/ your family/ your work place etc.

However not one church is THE CHURCH to go to and like I said as examples, different churches offer different needs (worship used as example).

Hope that clears it up Trev and thanks for your insight and indepth detailed outlook. Enjoyed it :D

I agree with much of what you have said…but! Many who have progressed this thinking to its logical conclusion have opened the way to a Church having many different services to cater for many different tastes (etc). Over time, the young separate from the old. Enter many modern Churches. This is not good. God intends men, women and children of all ages (i.e. His covenant people) to worship Him together (i.e. as one body). So we see a created “generation gap.”

So when selecting a Church I believe it very important to evaluate it on Scriptural basis. This includes assessing a potential Church in terms of; “does it worship together across the age groups?”

I still think the primary point of whether I should join a Church or not should be whether that Church is obedient to God’s entire Word. Yes, no Church is perfect. Any Church that is seeking to be obedient will be a place where God can and will use me, in all the capacities you suggest. This is different to selecting a Church on the basis to believing I will be most useful (etc) there.

what I suggest is that we go to church not only its time to go church but we go because of after this world or went we die where we will go too..heven or hell…so we dont have to choose to what we want is what the god want us to do…is to save people going to hell.
