ChristmasChristmas has passed, these days most just see it as another and over marketed (see my post on the origins of Santa Claus). As a kid of a sign writer who did plenty of Christmas signs and as a designer who sees many Christmas websites etc I see plenty of Xmas instead of Christmas. As a church kid I was told this was wrong but is it really?

What I was told about Xmas

I am sure most other Christians or religious people have been told the same and that is that the cross or ‘X’ is crossing or taking out Christ from Christmas. We all know its the case with more Santa’s than Jesus’ on cards, wrapping paper and other Christmas related items SO does this mean the X crosses out Christ?

Where the X in Xmas comes from?

No it does not come from some anti-Christian but rather the X in Xmas is actually the greek letter Chi, which was a common abbreviation of Kristos, Christ’s name. (Using the roman alphabet, I’ve also seen it written Xpistos. In greek, I believe that would be Χριστος.).

Why then do we use Xmas?

As I said before, my father is a signwriter and as a kid I remember him having to write “Merry Christmas” in this tiny window for a splash sign, so of course he wrote “Merry Xmas” as its shorter and allowed it to be bigger and more effective. So yes its just a short hand easier option.

My thoughts and what I suggest

Personally I still use ‘Christmas’ as it is all about Christ and while the ‘X’ does not mean you are crossing out Christ, Christ in Christmas is for me a better option. What is your thoughts and what do you personally use?

Hi Jermayne - like this site, lots of newsy bits . . . every time I go to go somewhere something else catches my eye. Was on my way to click on the Jubilee link when I saw the Christmas/Xmas thing and was interested in your views - presume you want to know mine - I always WRITE Christmas but I always TEXT Xmas, for obvious reasons. I don’t see anything wrong with it but I know some people do. I reckon we sure as heck fire are not offending God, who probably wishes we would spend as much time on the BIG issues - such triviality seems very religious ( to me )

keep up the good work here. I want to know more about RSS and is it any good for the likes of me, so I will be looking into it and how/why etc later on. . .paddy

@Paddy - Thanks for your comments and views.

XMAS - I do agree that Christmas can at times be long winded BUT while it may mean religous I personally prefer Chrissy BUT its always a personal choice and I am in no ways going to call you a lukey for XMAS.

RSS - If you read regularly online with anything from blogs/ newspapers etc I would suggest it. What RSS does is allows all your regular new articles come to you to save you clicking onto the website.

@Fred - Thanks for your question and I am sorry for using religous ‘jargon’….

Lukey is a word that is most commonly used by Christians to describe someone who is not ‘full on’ or dedicated to God/ Jesus which comes from the scripture in Revelations 3: 14-22, which describes that God would prefer us to be ‘full on’ for God or cold for God and not some where in between were it could confuse people or other Christians.

The problem with some people is that they take the ‘lukey’ remark too far and if someone does not agree with your point etc they are ‘lukey’.

Hope that helps Fred.

I personally use CHRISTMAS rather than “XMAS”. But I’ve notice when I read my messages almost of them uses Xmas, maybe they want to make it shorter. But I guess it doesn’t matter how you write, it’s the thought that counts.

If the intention is good, I see no harm in abbreviating Xmas
